AIEC give Staff Development seminar at the New York Institute of Technology
On the 22nd September 2011 AIEC was invited to the New York Institute of Technology in Bahrain to offer a morning of professional development discussion to the lecturing staff. The discussion pivoted around teaching issues, and teaching strategies were suggested to help alleviate problems which are typical across the GCC.

The emphasis was on cross-cultural expectations between a multi-cultural teaching cadre and their mainly Arabic cohorts. The development of empathetic teaching methods was introduced with specific examples of simple strategies which help to reduce barriers to acquisition and the consolidation of learning.  Debates were encouraged as to best-practice methods utilising established online technologies, such as anonymous asynchronous forums to support gender-separated cohorts and shift the learning paradigm towards a supportive community of learners.

Genuine examples of previous regional successes were introduced, along with rationale for multi-representational links to promote autonomous and exploratory learning as well as facilitating peer teaching by flipping classes.  Related concepts such as the promotion of vicarious and peripheral learning were also debated in this animated and engaging seminar.

    The Process of Grade Moderation

Moderation of curriculum and grading for courses administrated across multiple delivery sites is necessary to insure consistency of content and assessment of student performance. The goal is to provide common reference points for grading scales and content in order to guide markers in multiple campuses, thus ensuring fair and equivalenced grading within multicultural settings.

Moderation is one of the functions that AIEC provides.

Briefly, moderation is a process involving the objective comparison of materials gathered from across multiple sites to affirm that students are learning the same material and have the same learning objectives, and that assessments are graded in standard and consistent manner; usually in the final year of a program).
By conducting the moderation process, a course grade from one site is essentially equivalent to that in another site.

Seen as such, moderation is a quality control processes that must be rigorous to guarantee consistency and appropriate grading. AIEC gathers materials including syllabi, learning objectives, rubrics, and assessments and compares them in a fair, objective, and arms-length manner.  The outcomes are curricular development, staff development and quality assurance compliance with fewer opportunities for student grievance.

W5tv.com: Clearing the fog of online video
    AIEC Consultant, Prof. Torin Lucas

Educators of all stripes have been encouraged, coaxed and otherwise harangued to increase the presence of technology in their classrooms and laboratories; and for good reason, say technology enthusiasts, surmising that young adults today are far more likely to be engaged and connected with learning by way of the myriad of gadgetry that they keep on their belts or have beeping in their purses.

They say technology is helping educational organizations to decentralize beyond bricks and mortar and connect online with students across geography and conflicting schedules. Online video is one technology that is believed to be removing the walls of the classroom. It reaches students regardless of time and whereabouts, connecting wherever the learner may be and whenever they are available to learn. The possibilities are breathtaking, but these same technology experts neglect to explain how teachers can create their own video and how they can deliver their video quickly and easily to their students without it becoming a hindrance and distraction.
I can see and appreciate both sides of the technology divide.  As an educator myself with a Master degree in technology management, I can appreciate the role that online technologies such as video can play in reaching distant students (and I mean ‘distant’ both figuratively and literally)...

I have had wonderful comments on it from all reaches of the world. Thanks so much! Thanks for your patience...
